Market environment

  • Secondaries deal volume: The Private Equity Secondary market remains one of the most resilient areas of private markets, having seen the strongest first half year on record in H1 2026, up 20% YoY vs. 2025 which itself was a landmark year reaching a record of $225bn in deal volume in 2025 (+40% YoY), according to Evercore. This extends the impressive CAGR of +20% Secondaries markets has seen since 2013. We remain excited given secondaries market still represent only <3% of the Total Private Equity market (c.$10tn in AuM, according to Pitchbook), indicating significant runway for continued growth to come. LP-led Secondaries continue to be a key driver of this growth, representing 53% of transaction volume in 2025 (vs. 47% for GP-leds).
  • Secondaries pricing: Pricing of LP-led Secondary deals remains on the higher side, though declining slightly to an average of 90 cents on the dollar in H1 2026, underscoring the need to be disciplined and offer other non-price attributes such as speed and reliability of deal execution and deal structuring to remain competitive. Buyout strategies continue to comprise the majority of LP-led transaction volume, representing consistently over 2/3 of LP-led volume since 2022.

Performance commentary

  • In September 2026, Carmignac Private Evergreen delivered a net performance of +0.98% (EUR I), driven by both secondary and direct investments. September was a busy month with two new direct investments: Project Soar, a leading Mechanical, Electrical and Plumbing (MEP) services provider in the US, benefiting from strong tailwinds from growing data center demand, and Mistral, Europe's sovereign champion offering cutting-edge open-weight AI models and compute. We were particularly proud to have attained access in Mistral, which was highly oversubscribed - and to be one of the few asset managers to be granted an allocation. The key contributors to performance were driven by Project Soar, which benefited from a positive revaluation at 1.2x versus its reference valuation at December 2025, our exposure to SpaceX further to stock price appreciation of +5% over the month, and the secondary deal Project Langley, which saw value appreciation further to the receipt of June-26 valuations. Finally, the appreciation of the US dollar, up +2.2% against the euro, also contributed positively to performance. The performance was slightly offset by the liquid sleeve, which saw a slight negative return against the backdrop of a less favourable rates environment.
  • Today our portfolio offers exposure to >1,200 companies and is highly diversified across sectors, geographies and vintages, while still maintaining a focus on developed markets and private equity buyouts. The liquid sleeve of the portfolio is close to the target allocation of c.15% and is actively managed and invested in a curated range of Carmignac’s fixed income and credit funds on a no fee basis and has generated more than c.4% in annualised net returns since the launch of the fund.

Outlook strategy

  • Investment Strategy: Focused on Secondaries, Carmignac Private Evergreen allows us to offer a one-stop-shop Private Equity solution for investors looking to build a diversified exposure to high quality buyout companies from Day 1. Our target allocation includes a focus on Secondaries through co-investments featuring attractive terms, combined with direct co-investments to generate alpha. Primary investments will be considered later on in the fund’s life. Secondaries offer an attractive risk-return profile, thanks to the possibility to negotiate discounts and deferred payments and offers numerous benefits such as a reduced J-curve effect and blind-pool risk. It is an asset class with low correlation with both public and other private market strategies, which reiterates the complementarity of public and private strategies within an investment portfolio.
  • Outlook: The outlook for Private Equity secondary investments in 2026 remains favourable, supported by a strong flow of opportunities driven by investors’ liquidity needs, portfolio rebalancing and the desire to crystallise gains. We are currently working on a highly diversified LP-led secondary transaction providing exposure to a portfolio of high-quality mid-market GPs. The portfolio continues to benefit from significant exposure to secondary transactions, complemented by direct co-investments aimed at generating alpha. While valuation levels remain competitive, the secondary market continues to offer favourable dynamics for buyers and attractive entry points.
