Take a look at the Fund's performance supported by our Fund managers’ market commentary and strategy insight.

Our monthly comments

Data as of:  30 Sep 2026.

Market environment

  • September marked a change of tone for European equities, with the Stoxx 600 falling 2.5% over the month, its first monthly decline in six months, and ending the third quarter modestly lower.
  • Rising bond yields weighed on risk appetite as central banks adopted a more hawkish stance. The ECB raised its key interest rates by 25 basis points, taking the deposit facility rate to 2.50%, and indicated that inflation is set to remain well above target for an extended period.
  • The energy shock linked to the conflict in the Middle East intensified, with oil rising close to 14% over the month as US-Iran talks stalled, while German inflation accelerated to its highest level since December 2023, reviving concerns around stagflation.
  • Rate-sensitive and cyclical areas of the market, including financials and industrials, came under pressure, while more defensive segments such as utilities proved relatively resilient.
  • Performance dispersion remained elevated across sectors and individual stocks, with investors continuing to differentiate sharply between companies able to demonstrate earnings visibility and those exposed to rising costs and tighter financial conditions.

Performance commentary

  • In September, the fund delivered a positive performance in a declining market, driven by both the Long and Short books.
  • On the Long side, Meta Platforms was our largest contributor. The stock had its best month since 2013, following the launch of Meta Muse, its consumer AI agent, which shifted the market narrative from concerns over the scale of AI investment towards a clearer path to monetization.
  • Our life sciences positions, Thermo Fisher and Sartorius Stedim Biotech, also contributed positively, from growing investor recognition of its role in AI-enabled drug discovery and development.
  • On the short side, gains were broad-based, as our positions recovered from the July short squeeze. Allwyn was our largest short contributor, while EQT and Sopra Steria also contributed positively.
  • On the negative side, some of our Greek long positions, including Public Power Corporation and GEK Terna, had a negative contribution, as rising bond yields weighed on capital-intensive utilities and infrastructure names.

Outlook strategy

  • The net exposure of the strategy was brought down to 10-15% throughout the month, as we continued to scale up our shorts.
  • We remain constructive on the Long side in industries such as specialty engineering, specialty chemicals, utilities, medical technology, aerospace and defense, and semiconductors.
  • We remain constructive on Europe in 2026, as the fiscal stimulus and low rates provide an attractive tailwind.
  • Germany has removed the fiscal drag which has weighted on Europe for more than a decade and the upcoming defense and infrastructure historic investment plan will have a profound impact on the overall region.
  • Our portfolio remains focused on stock specific and idiosyncratic drivers, rather than macro plays.
  • On the short side, we continue to find many new names in the Consumer and Industrials spaces with poor balance sheets and deteriorating fundamentals, bringing tightened margins and profit warnings.
