Market environment

  • Activity remained resilient, particularly in the US. Q2 GDP grew 1.5% annualised, while private domestic demand rose a stronger 4.2%. The labour market softened, with July payrolls down 23,000 and unemployment at 4.1%, while inflation eased only marginally to 3.4%. In the euro area, Q2 GDP grew 0.4% QoQ, while August inflation rose to 3.3%, mainly on higher energy prices.
  • At Jackson Hole, Chair Warsh struck a hawkish tone, stressing that the economy remains resilient, financial conditions are not restrictive, and inflation has yet to improve sufficiently.
  • Global equities reaching new highs on resilient macro data, strong earnings and a recovery in AI/semis stocks.
  • Emerging markets outperformed developed markets, led by a strong rebound in Taiwan and Korea as semiconductor and AI-related stocks recovered from their June–July sell-off. Japan also performed strongly, while Europe lagged because of its lower Technology exposure and greater sensitivity to energy volatility.
  • The US dollar weakened, pressured by higher fiscal and policy risk premia and renewed concerns around currency debasement. Against this backdrop, gold a were among the strongest-performing assets.
  • Oil remained volatile but broadly unchanged, as persistent tensions between the US and Iran supported prices, while broader supply and demand dynamics limited the upside.

Performance commentary

  • Over the month of August, the Fund delivered a strong absolute return and outperformed its reference indicator. Performance was driven by strong stock selection across software, AI infrastructure and selected technology hardware companies.
  • Our strongest contributors were concentrated in cloud software and AI-related infrastructure. Atlassian was the largest contributor, rising by more than 90%, while GitLab and Microsoft also delivered meaningful gains. Together, these holdings drove the strong contribution from the Cloud & Software bucket.
  • Additional positive contributions came from our exposure to the physical infrastructure supporting AI adoption. Asia Vital Components, Nvidia, Fositek, Nitto Boseki and Credo Technology were among the leading contributors. This reflected the strength of the Fund’s exposure to computing, cooling, connectivity and semiconductor infrastructure.
  • Performance was partially offset by weakness in several technology hardware and semiconductor-related holdings. Celestica, Broadcom, MKS Instruments and Lotes were the largest detractors, while Applied Materials, Horizon Robotics and Amphenol also weighed modestly on returns.
  • Overall, the month illustrated the benefits of the Fund’s diversified exposure across the technology value chain. Strong gains from software and AI infrastructure leaders more than offset weakness in a limited number of semiconductor and hardware positions, enabling the Fund to capture the continued expansion of AI investment beyond the largest technology platforms.

Outlook strategy

  • Over the month, we added to our Asian names on weakness, mostly in the memory space and across the AI supply chain.
  • We maintain a low exposure to hyperscalers and manage it tactically across names. Over the month we continued trimming Microsoft, Amazon and Google as we have a preference in hardware.
  • In the software space, we exited our position in Servicenow as we prefer names like Atlassian and Gitlab, both being software for software development and being less likely to be negatively disrupted by AI given that they should allow developers to be more productive. On this same thought we initiated a position in Wix the software platform that enables individuals and businesses to create, manage and grow websites without advanced coding skills.
  • Over the month we also initiated a new position in Applied Materials where long term outlook is very positive and in Marvell to add exposure to the optical space where we have been underweight.
  • In the current environment, we continue to emphasise diversification across the technology stack, balancing high-growth semiconductor exposure with more cyclical and valuation-sensitive segments of the ecosystem, while actively managing position sizing in areas that have experienced very strong rallies.
