Market environment

  • A sharp rotation out of Tech/AI took place. Semiconductors and hyperscalers corrected as investors increasingly questioned the returns on massive AI investments. Hyperscaler capex, FCF pressure and concerns around the financing of the broader AI ecosystem—particularly leveraged/neocloud players—were at the heart of the sell-off.
  • Non-AI areas of the market rebounded, notably Europe and healthcare.
  • US Treasuries and German Bunds benefited from the risk-off move. French government bonds moved in the opposite direction, pressured by social unrest, difficult budget discussions and renewed concerns over the debt trajectory.
  • The US economic backdrop remained solid. Q3 GDP grew at a robust 3.4% annualised pace, while September CPI came in stronger than expected.
  • Oil prices moved higher on renewed tensions in the Middle East.
  • Despite this context, both the Fed and the ECB left rates unchanged.

Performance commentary

  • The fund ended the month in positive territory, significantly outperforming its reference indicator. Stock selection was the main driver of the outperformance.
  • Genmab was the largest contributor, with the shares rising an impressive 62% over the month. The biotech company benefited from a series of positive clinical results in ovarian and head & neck cancers. Our decision to increase the position in September and early October paid off, with Genmab ending the month as the fund’s largest holding.
  • Two other major convictions also performed strongly. DSV (+20%) reported solid Q3 results, confirming that the integration of Schenker is progressing well and that the group remains on track to deliver the expected cost savings. EssilorLuxottica (+22%) also beat expectations, supported by strong demand for its core eyewear business and rapid growth in smart glasses and myopia-control products.
  • The fixed-income portfolio also posted positive performance, thanks to its long-duration positioning on the German curve, as well as credit protection and inflation strategies.

Outlook strategy

  • European growth has been more resilient than expected, notably supported by Germany, where domestic demand remains solid and higher spending on defence, infrastructure and energy should provide further support.
  • The backdrop remains attractive for European equities. Europe’s lower exposure to the AI theme can increasingly be seen as a diversification advantage, particularly as investors look beyond the most crowded US technology names and market performance broadens.
  • During the month, we selectively took profits following strong performance in financial exchanges and some of our skincare holdings.
  • Conversely, we used recent weakness to add to some of our preferred AI-related names, including ASML and Schneider Electric.
  • We also initiated some new positions, among them are Universal Music Group our AstraZeneca.
  • We maintain a moderate modified duration focused on Germany as well as a significant level of credit protection.
